Flyers vs. Devils – Game 5 (7:30 PM ET, May 8, 2012)
The Philadelphia Flyers are looking to keep their season alive. They are trying to survive the loss of leading scorer Claude Giroux. The New Jersey Devils have been relentless in their attack in the seven game series. The Devils lead the series by 3-1. Both the teams meet again for Game 5 (7:30 PM ET, May 8, 2012) at Wells Fargo Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
In Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, Giroux was suspended by the NHL on Monday for his illegal check to the head on New Jersey center Dainius Zubrus. The punishment leaves the Flyers without their leading scorer and their All-Star forward as they try to rally from a 3-1 deficit.
Devils’ Coach Peter DeBoer wants to finish the Flyers with their first opportunity. He wants his team to have a killer instinct. Continuing to frustrate the Flyers will be a part of that process, something they have done a tremendous job of the last three games. Flyers’ Coach Peter Laviolette said his team has survived adversity all season and does not see that changing now, and he believes what his team has shown in the past gives him hope for the future.
Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov has been markedly better in the second round, posting a 3.00 GAA and .902 save percentage. He had 3.89 goals-against average and .871 save percentage in the first round. In Game 4, Zubrus had a pair of goals. Devils forward Ryan Carter could return to the lineup for Game 5, even though he sat out Game 4 with a stomach illness. Flyers defenseman Andrej Meszaros (back) is day-to-day.
When trailing 3-1, the Flyers are just 1-14 all-time in series. Against the Boston Bruins was their only win in the 2010 Eastern Conference Semifinals, when they rallied from a 3-0 series deficit to win. In the absence of Giroux, the leading scorer in the playoffs, the big question facing the Flyers now will be how the lineup is remade.
For the first time since Game 4 of the first round, Zac Rinaldo could return to the lineup. With Maxime Talbot or Eric Wellwood moving to center, he will likely play on the fourth line. Rookie Sean Couturier could move up to a higher line and take on a more offensive mindset. He has been used primarily in a defensive role. Couturier was a 90-point scorer in his last two seasons of junior hockey and he had 14 goals in 77 regular-season games. Therefore, he is well aware how to put the puck in the net.
This game is crucial for the Flyers and it will be interesting to see their approach to Game 5. The betting odds do favor the Devils. The sportsbook have the Devils (5/4) and the Flyers (5/7).
